Battling Rumors: MGC and your Xbox Live Account

I’ve gotten an influx of messages over the past couple of months from people asking to close their account. Much more than normal. I’ve been too busy with working on other MGC projects that I haven’t really followed up on these messages other than to honor their request. However, one nice user brought it to my attention that he wanted to close his account because he heard a rumor that Xbox Live accounts could be stolen by others simply by having an account at MyGamerCard.

Let me assure you that this is patently false

First, the logic part: MGC has no physical access to your actual Xbox Live account.
The only information that we even see are GamerCard information that’s also reflected on Xbox.com. We don’t know any personal information about you beyond what you tell us in your registration. All of your billing information and other private information is never provided to MGC.

Second, a word of general caution: The ONLY way someone can access your account is A) You give your Xbox Live ID and password to someone for the purposes of getting achievements for you or you trusting a site that promises ‘fr33 m$ pointz’ - or B) Someone knows your email and guesses your password. If you do mirror your Live ID email address and password, MGC uses very secure systems to protect that information, including the practice of storing an encrypted password rather than your actual one.

Thirdly, a disclaimer: You do not have to provide your Windows Live ID and/or associated password to MGC! You are required to give an email address that we can contact you, and we understand that you may only use one email address for everything. But you can always use a different password than those you set on other sites. That’s why we have to verify your GamerTag via Xbox.com - if we needed your actual Live ID information, we would have a Live ID login button that you might see on game developer sites (Rockstar, etc) where they can instantly link your GamerTag with their information. While MGC is a trusted partner with the Xbox Community Developer Program, we do not yet have that capability.

If you ever have any questions as to how your information on MGC is secured, or if you receive any correspondence claiming to be from MGC that you’re unsure of, ALWAYS let us know immediately - we’ll be glad to help!

A quick note about your email’s ‘Spam’ button (hint: Don’t push it!)

I’ve been getting a lot of messages from email providers informing me that members are clicking the Spam button on MGC’s messages, and I want to address what it means for us, and what it means for your account.

Marking messages as spam is NOT a harmless act. You’re telling your email provider that we send messages to people without a prior relationship, which is obviously untrue, since we (MGC or another respectable website) wouldn’t have your email address without you providing it. It also affects our ability to contact other members who want to activate their account or get periodic information about MGC.

We’re working on providing a more automated solution, but if you wish to close your account for whatever reason, you can do so by contacting us at userservices [at] mygamercard [dot] net. Per our agreement with Junk Mail Reporting services, all accounts using the Spam button will be permanently (and unchangeably) uninvited from our service.

Thanks for your understanding.

Celebrate the New Year with the new Silverlight NXE Card!

In celebration of the New Year, we would like to show you something you’re familiar with, in a new interactive way! Just click a game, an Avatar, or scroll through the game list to see it in action.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

Get Microsoft Silverlight

You may be prompted to install Silverlight - don’t worry, it’s Microsoft’s version of
Flash (crudely speaking, of course). Installation should only take a moment.

While normally it would look exactly identical to our image-based NXE GamerCard, we had to dim the lights and let a few fireworks fly for 2010!

Dynamo Matt has done an incredible job on this application. While I helped guide its direction and tweak values here and there, he’s been working for several weeks building this for MGC and getting it just right. Be sure to send him your thoughts and encouragement!

Future updates are already being planned, and over the next few months, you may see changes and additions to what may very well become MGC’s new Flagship GamerCard. As always, you can grab this from the MyGamerCard Homepage.

MyGamerCard wishes you a very wonderful New Year!
